K

andersteg is a small, family-oriented winter sports centre to the North of the Lötschberg tunnel. It has a good range of winter sports activities including ice-fishing, curling, skating, tobogganing, ice-climbing and some very scenic cross-country circuits and winter walks. It is limited for downhill, however, except perhaps for beginners and those who just like to do the occasional run - and the runs are all served by surface lifts. Swiss rail offer discounts for day trippers who want to enjoy the toboggan rides from Ramslauenen down to Kiental, and from Oeschinensee to Kandersteg.

Every January the Belle Epoque week is taken very seriously in Kandersteg with period costumes, horse-drawn carriages and a wisftul reverence for a world gone-by. Fortunately the hotels do not revert to Victorian austerity.
