Central and Eastern Switzerland

It is difficult to classify the Swiss Alpine resorts that are not in Romandy, the Bernese Oberland or Graubunden as a unified group of resorts. Some of them belong to loose affiliations of resorts or share common cultural identity or geography, but what most characterises them is that they tend to be little known outside of Switzerland. This may yet change - Andermatt is expanding rapidly, and the mooted lift connections from Engelberg to Hasliberg would certainly create one of the world's best ski areas.

What also characterises these resorts is that, apart from those in Ticino, they are generally easy enough to get to from Zurich, Basel and Lucerne. This means some of them can get busy at weekends, but there are rarely significant queues. One can understand the allure - for a day trip or a weekend break many of these resorts offer outstanding skiing and snowboarding.
