I

nterlaken is an old community previously named Aarmühle - mill on the Aare - but renamed to reflect the settlement's growing span between the two lakes, Brienz and Thun, through which the Aare runs. With a beautiful setting on the lakes, with the mighty mountains that tower over it and with its excellent rail, boat and bus services, Interlaken has a long history as a tourist centre. The resort has no downhill pistes, but it is a large winter sports centre with a wide range of activities in the town and a good range of accommodation, including several backpacker hostels. It is also very easy to get to Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren by skibus or train, plus there are a number of smaller winter sports destinations a short distance away by bus.
